Big Update From The Echo Chamber Club

Today is a pretty exciting day for The Echo Chamber Club. Which is why this picture is of me having a pint – as that’s what I’ll hopefully be doing later!

I had two main objectives when I set up The Echo Chamber Club in June. The first is to see if manual curation is a better way to try and get out of a social media induced echo-chamber (or filter bubble) compared to developing AI technologies and new algorithms. The second was to ensure that I researched a new topic every week. When you have a newsletter with hundreds of subscribers – you cannot let them down.

To do this I hacked together a Wordpress theme, found a colour scheme I liked and launched a very basic front page. By ‘launched’ I mean I posted the idea on Reddit and on my facebook to see what would happen. And it was incredible. After one week I’d already got 160 subscribers – and 80% of them weren’t people I knew. It was clear that this was a service that people were looking for. It was exciting.

Shortly afterwards I figured out a way to fund the project (and myself) and took myself to Berlin (which is cheaper) so I could work on the newsletter full-time. I wanted to gather together amazing contributors, spend some time marketing the newsletter and more importantly – build a great service.

New Features and WhatsApp Notifications

So today is a big day. Today we have a brand new website – and a brand new way to receive our newsletters.

  • We have a ‘contributors’ section here. Get in touch if you’d like to curate a newsletter!! And please see our previous contributors here.
  • We can finally accept donations. At the moment everything incl. hosting fees, email management and domain management is entirely self-funded by us. Please help us out! You can donate to The Echo Chamber Club here and you will be first in line for our planned members section with members perks.
  • We have a section which is all about you! We want to learn more about our subscribers – so tell us what you think here!
  • I’m excited about the previous newsletters page – now you can read our newsletters easily online!

We are also offering a new service. We will send you the newsletter via WhatsApp if you ask us to. I’ve heard from many subscribers that they don’t use email all that often, or the emails end up in their spam, or in their promotions folder.

If you would like to receive the newsletter via WhatsApp then take the following steps:

  1. Add +44 7342 330 538 to your mobile address book. This is very important because if our number is not in your phone book then we cannot message you.
  2. Send us a WhatsApp with your name and your email address.
    • If you haven’t subscribed via email then we will subscribe you there too – WhatsApp may change their rules about broadcasting, and we don’t want you to lose out on our newsletter if that happens.
  3. Wait for a message to say you’ve successfully subscribed. N.B. this may take a few hours as it’s a manual process.
  4. You’ll receive a WhatsApp whenever we publish a new newsletter with a link to view it on the new website.

This is an exciting step for us. It’s not something we’ve seen other publishers offer – possibly because it’s quite manual – but it’s something you’ve asked us for so we’re going to roll with it!

As ever – let me know what you think. I’m pretty accessible via email, twitter and now… WhatsApp!

I started this newsletter a couple of months ago to try and actively find articles that went against my point of view. I had a theory people were trapped in an Echo Chamber as they only had access to those who shared their own beliefs.

The response has been overwhelming. Given the majority of new ventures are supported by friends and family (and don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a lot of support there), the majority of readers are people who I’ve never met. The club is being shared by all of you, and we’re growing at an encouraging rate!

As a result, I’ve decided to make this newsletter my full-time occupation instead of part-time. The website will be updated. We’ll start distributing information via Whatsapp. There will be a greater variety of contributors. We will put on events with interesting speakers.

The mission of The Echo Chamber is clear. We find the established and mainstream point of view and we challenge it. Sometimes what we send will make you think twice, and sometimes what we send may anger you. We want to help you empathise with other people, and see the world through the eyes of others.

We hope you continue to support us – forwarding on our newsletters, talking about us with your friends, and sharing our message on social media.

Please contact me at any time – I can be reached via editor@echochamber.club or alice@echochamber.club. I would like to hear from everyone and anyone.

For our newsletter on 19th August, The Echo Chamber wrote about Rural Living in the UK. Here are the references we used from Defra.

Education

Pupils who live in rural locations do better than those in urban locations – however, this trend is reversed when it comes to the location of the school. Rural schools achieve worse results when compared to urban schools.

General Levels of Education in Rural UK

The population who live in rural areas are more likely to have a qualification compared to those living in large towns and cities.

Earnings and Business

You are more likely to be employed if you work outside towns and cities.

See the report here

You are more likely to work from home – especially if you live in a hamlet. (Data from 2013)

However, your earnings will be less than those who work in towns and cities on average.

But this drop in earnings is made up for by housing costs. If you live rurally you are more likely to have more disposable income.

Rural Health

You are likely to live longer if you live in sparsely populated areas compared to urban areas. The infant mortality rate has also historically been a lot lower.

Male Life Expectancy

Female Life Expectancy

Infant Mortality

Crime – Rural vs Urban

You are safer if you live in rural communities compared to cities. This is true of robberies, burglaries, violent crime and sexual assault.

Summary

In some respects, we should take this analysis with a pinch of salt. When looking at averages, it’s difficult to see the discrepancies in inequality – the very poor and the very rich could balance out to create normal average.

Some evidence of this does come from housing affordability. For this section, DEFRA took statistics from the lowest quartile of earnings and the price of buying a house. Here there was an indication that there are greater inequalities in rural areas compared to urban areas because rural housing was deemed more unaffordable. When all the other statistics presented a picture of rural areas being better educated, more healthy and with households of greater wealth, these stats show that it is hard for those earning the least to find affordable housing.

The Week and The Echo Chamber take the same subject… http://archive.echochamber.club/week-echo-chamber-take-similar-focus/ Fri, 05 Aug 2016 10:40:13 +0000 http://archive.echochamber.club/?p=165 … but one takes the popularist view, and the other shows you a different take on the headlines.

… but one takes the popularist view, and the other shows you a different take on the headlines

Last week, The Echo Chamber looked at the influence Putin may have over American politics. It was clear that Russia was all over the news, and many American commentators were concerned about Putin’s relationship with Donald Trump. They believe they were ‘in cahoots’. A serious allegation indeed against a potential American President.

The Week, an extremely high quality and popular magazine also picked up on the story. They produced a fantastic front cover and the following editorial:

Thank you to the reader who sent this in to us!

The text on that image may be quite small for many of our readers to inspect. So here is the top line story. Anne Applebaum in The Washington Post states that “Trump has never made any secret of his admiration for Russia’s President”. Paul Krugman in the New York Times is quoted as noting that Trump’s campaign manager also worked for the pro-Russian Ukrainian President ousted in 2014. Dana Milbank in The Washington Post notes that if the shoe was on the other foot, Trump would be throwing these allegations at his opponent with full enthusiasm.

The Week also puts a balanced view in from Julia Ioffe in Foreign Policy – she rightly notes that no hotels that Trump owns exist in Russia and furthermore offers the opinion: “the very fact we’re discussing Trump being a Putin plant will delight Putin”.

This was the point made in The Echo Chamber last week. When all the editorials were commenting on Trumps potential involvement with the Kremlin, we focussed on New York Times editorials which shows that it’s in Russian interest to spread paranoia. By reading up on The Internet Research Agency you’ll be more tuned in to how information is being presented to a Western world.

What you read shapes how you view the world

Please note, that above I have paraphrased a paraphrased article. I’m well aware of the effect chinese whispers can have on facts. However, I’m not intending to commentate on whether Trump is in ‘kahoots with the Kremlin.’

My commentary on this subject is to show how millions of middle-class, well educated people are potentially mis-informed by the press every single day. This in itself may be a fairly moot point – but we would like to point to many instances where we are mis-informed by our media, and indeed by the articles that are readily shared on social media channels.

This is yet another example of where popularist opinions and media can mislead you from what is actually going on. In a world which is becoming increasingly divided, it is becoming more important than ever before to be empathetic towards other points of view. But you can’t be empathetic to other points of view if you have no access.

This is where The Echo Chamber comes in – subscribe to our weekly newsletter today.

[In a fairly petty manner, we’d also like to note that we got there a full week before The Week too. Just for the record.]
